Spotlight: Dapper House Barber & Shop

Spotlight

Dapper House Barber & Shop

On the west side of South Main, between Third and Fourth Streets, you’ve probably noticed a classy a-frame sign with golden letters that read: Dapper House Barber. The sign points you to a remarkably obscure door adorned with a classic barber pole. The door is enchantingly marked 306 ½ South Main Street- behind which is where Sean Klosky and his seven employees perform their arcane craft of personal service. I call it a craft because it’s much more than haircuts. Sean has resurrected a lost art of personal service. Here, you can get a shave, a steamed hot towel facial, scalp and hand massage, and a shoe shine.

Klosky describes his business as a vintage, upscale barber shop, “I really wanted to bring a business with heart and a vintage feel to the community- a shop where people feel comfortable when they walk in, and feel like a new person when they walk out.” Klosky and his staff take serious pride in their work. The whole experience gives you the unique sensation that you actually matter to them.

“Our shop offers a unique vintage atmosphere with modern haircuts and premium products. Hidden in plain sight, the barber shop makes you feel at home from start to finish. We have great barbers, who are even better people.”

Walking with Klosky through his shop, I felt like an extra in The Untouchables. The decor stuns you with nostalgia- dark wood trim, armchairs, and monochrome photographs. He pointed-out a few framed photos on the wall and gave a brief background for each, “That’s my grandfather in this one.” These aren’t just stock images to stage an experience for the patron, these pictures are genuine. “All of the photos on the walls are of my actual family. People ask us all the time, ‘Who are all the people on the wall?’”

“We really don’t have a target customer. We specialize in men’s style haircuts and cut all age ranges.” There’s something refreshing about that approach. Dapper House casts a wide net and has a regional draw, with customers traveling up to forty-five minutes for their top-of-the-line, personal service. Although most of Klosky’s customers live in Royal Oak, some venture from as far away as Walled Lake. Social media, word of mouth, and the business’s sterling online reputation really boost awareness for Klosky’s brand. “It’s really cool to have people drive 45 minutes to show support.”

After seeing all of this, I was sold. I booked an appointment for my friend (we’ll call him Steven) two days before his wedding. I was his best man and figured this was one gift he’d appreciate. I bought Steven the Tangiers Treatment, which includes a haircut, hot towel facial with steamer, relaxing scalp massage, and manicure with hand massage- a complete overhaul before his big day.

Klosky has operated here for two years, but none of this came easy. Building a successful and reputable shop took time and a lot of effort. “The biggest challenge was starting from scratch and building a reputation. We just made sure we were putting out great haircuts and giving great customer service.”

Royal Oak was the ideal location to implement his vision. He already had a strong relationship with this city and knew it well. “It’s a busy city with a great downtown area. I’ve lived and worked in Royal Oak for the last 12 years. I actually used to bartend on this same block so it’s really cool to see everything come full circle and now own a business just a couple doors down.”

In addition to Royal Oak being a great business location choice, the city had a special draw for him, “I like that you can’t really put a label on it. There’s a melting pot of people when you walk down the street. It’s always busy, so when you’re down here you always feel a part of something bigger.”
