Legal Aid Clinics for Pro Se Litigants

The Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library offers four free legal aid clinic programs to assist self-represented litigants throughout the county. These clinics can inform individuals about court procedures, advise them of legal rights, and in some cases, can provide representation in court.

An overview of the clinic programs and their winter/spring schedules are attached. Of particular interest to the District Courts are the clinics offered by the Legal Aid & Defender Association and the Salvation Army. These organizations provide assistance to low-income individuals in the following areas:

  • Landlord tenant cases
  • Small claims court cases
  • Criminal Expungements
  • Other civil matters (excluding family law)

Representing one’s self in court can be a daunting experience for a litigant. Such cases also present special challenges to court systems as they often require more time and have more proceedings than cases where the parties have representation. Any assistance that can be provided to the self-represented helps all involved.
