Consumers Energy Gas Pipeline Improvements

Where: North Main Street between Midland Blvd. and Englewood Ave. 

When: The section of road shown below will close Friday, May 2, at 6:00 a.m. The road will reopen to traffic on Monday, May 5, at 6:00 a.m. 

Detour: There will be a signed detour in place routing drivers to Rochester Road. Please follow signage. 

Why: The work includes the installation of new piping across the roadway, performed by Consumer's Energy.

Parking Open Houses

Change is in the air for parking in Downtown Royal Oak... and we want your feedback!

The City is investigating new parking options, and we'd like you to be a part of the process. Join us for a set of Community Parking Open Houses on May 7—you'll have the chance to meet prospective vendors, test the equipment, and ask questions. The open houses are informal, and you can drop in whenever it's convenient for you;. 

Your input will be hugely important as we work towards our goal of easier, community-supported parking for all!

No Mow May

Let it Grow in May

In April, the Royal Oak City Commission approved a resolution for No Mow May, allowing residents to give their lawns a break and encourage local biodiversity.

No code enforcement notices for overgrown lawns will be issued during the month of May ONLY. 

Participation in No Mow May is completely VOLUNTARY. 

OPTIONAL No Mow May yard signs are available for purchase at City Hall for just $5. They’re a great way to spread the word and let your neighbors know your longer lawn is intentional—and temporary. The signs are weather-resistant and can be used year after year. You can find them at the Treasurer's Office on the first floor of City Hall, 203 S Troy St.

Explaining your landscaping choices to neighbors and passersby helps them see that not mowing isn't neglect, but a deliberate effort to create wildlife habitat.

Whether you're just starting or looking to deepen your impact, this is your next step on the path to change.

What is your main priority when using 11 Mile Rd.?

  • Is it just about driving a vehicle from one end to the other as quickly as possible?
  • How do people on foot, in wheelchairs, on bikes, or walking with families experience 11 Mile?
  • What kinds of businesses does 11 Mile Rd. support, and how do people access them—today? Ten years from now?

These are the kinds of questions the City asks when considering road and street development projects—and now we're asking YOU. We want your feedback about 11 Mile Rd., slated for redevelopment in 2027. We’d like to understand how you and your family use the corridor so that we can make thoughtful, smart, people-oriented design decisions.

Food Scraps Only

Bring your compost to the WEST porch of the farmers market between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Look for the bright green bins! 

WHAT CAN GO IN THE BIN:

Acceptable materials include food scraps, BPI* certified materials, coffee and tea. (Download the Royal Oak Recycling Guide (PDF).)

🚫 Plastic & metal 

🚫 Non-BPI certified food containers 

🚫 Plastic bags are our biggest problem—please bring your compost in a compostable bag or a reusable bucket.

*The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) checks if a material can break down safely in compost. If something is BPI-certified, it means it has been tested to make sure it composts properly.
