Guns & Hoses

Guns & Hoses Charity Hockey Game

The annual Guns & Hoses Charity Hockey Game set for April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lindell Ice Arena. This year's event will benefit 8-year-old Will DeMeritt and the DeMeritt Family of Lake Orion.

Will DeMeritt is an energetic, 8-year-old boy from Lake Orion. Like any other 3rd grader, Will enjoys the sportsmanship and independence of sports; especially gymnastics. Will has also been deaf since birth and was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes in 2015. To have the same opportunity as any other child his age, Will requires interpreter services for American Sign Language, which costs a considerable amount to provide. Sadly, in 2017 the DeMeritt Family lost the financial assistance that made that possible. Your support is key to providing a new source of financial assistance for the DeMeritt Family in 2018 and beyond.

All proceeds from the 2018 Guns & Hoses Charity Hockey Game will go directly to the DeMeritt Family and allow them to provide an ASL interpreter for Will well into the future.

Bike Lane Plans

North /South Bike Route Comes to Royal Oak

A north-south dedicated bike route, which has been a goal of the Royal Oak City Commission for the past 7 years, will begin construction this spring.

The design of the bike route is the result of the concerted efforts of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Sub-committee, which held numerous public meetings and work sessions where the goals, options, routes and details were openly discussed. South Washington and North Main Streets were selected due to the relatively low traffic volumes that exist which can accommodate such a road reconfiguration.

Green Minute: Pizza Box Recycling

When discarding those pie boxes, please keep in mind:

1. NO food, melted cheese or stray toppings. Please discard.
2. NO cardboard or paper liner. Please discard.

3. NO pizza saver (white circular object). Please discard.
4. A small amount of grease is ok, BUT if there’s too much it could spoil the entire paper load (not just your recycling but an entire truck full). When in doubt throw out.
5. If the bottom is too soiled, please tear off the top and recycle. Discard the bottom.

Oh...Rats

Oh...Rats!

It is commonly known that there are rats in Royal Oak. With construction and other displacement factors, they are always looking for new places to nest.

Keep Rodents Away

You may not have a nest on your property, but you may unknowingly be contributing to the problem.  Prevention is much easier and cheaper than fighting an infestation. Here are some tips.
  • Rats need a food source.  It can be up to 300 feet away from their nest. Dog waste, bird seed, and garbage are rat favorites. They can survive on ONE ounce of food per day. The more food, the more rats.
  • Rats need a place to live.  Underground holes, often near buildings, wood piles, discarded items etc. are a sign you may have rats living in your yard.
  • Rats do not respect property lines.  They think this is their neighborhood.  Their dining room may be in one lot while their bedrooms are several lots away.
