Background

Sharlan Douglas has lived in Royal Oak for more than 20 years. She owns Douglas Communications Group, a Royal Oak public relations and social marketing firm.


She was the founding executive director of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association, where she forged consensus among the leaders of 17 local and county governments and state agencies, raised nearly $4 million and remade the image of Eight Mile Road in the eyes of the news media and regional residents.


She is the former president/CEO of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce and was a vice president at the Metropolitan Center for High Technology, Michigan' first business incubator. She spent five years in account management with one of Detroit's top public relations counseling firms.


Sharlan has served on the planning commission for nine years before being elected in 2013. She is the vice president of the Michigan Association of Planning. Sharlan received a BA in journalism from Michigan State University.


Sharlan is a longtime member of Stagecrafters, where she's served on the board of directors and as an actor, director and crew member. She lives in a 1918 Arts& Crafts home with her husband, his mom and a rescue dog.


She is currently serving on the City/School Liaison Committee, Employee Relations& Suggestion Committee, Farmer's Market Committee and the ROOTS Committee.
