[ARCHIVED] Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Normandy Oaks

Prescrubed burn in Normandy Oaks, 2024

Working closely with Royal Oak Public Services and the Fire Department, experts from Natural Community Services will conduct a prescribed (controlled) burn at Normandy Oaks Park in early May.

Date of the Burn

To be determined. The date and times are carefully chosen based on park growth and weather conditions. Experts have targeted May 5-14, with the actual date depending on weather conditions and wind patterns. Check back here and keep your eyes on the City's Facebook page for updates.

What is a Prescribed Burn?

It's a carefully planned fire conducted by experts to manage vegetation, rejuvenate soil, promote new growth, and maintain a healthy balance of plant species. Many plants in our park actually depend on periodic fires for their survival—controlled burns support biodiversity and ensure a thriving habitat for wildlife.

Is a Prescribed Burn Dangerous?

No. Burns of this nature are conducted with lots of planning by experts and are carefully controlled within specific, targeted areas. In this year's Normandy Oaks burn, the team will be targeting invasive, cool-season grasses to make room for more desirable vegetation and plantings.

What Will I Notice on the Day of the Burn? Should I Report Smoke or Flames?

Normandy Oaks will be closed on the day of the burn, with signage indicating that a prescribed burn is underway and asking people not to call 911 or report to authorities. If you live adjacent to or near the park, you may smell smoke, see smoke, or even see low-level flames in the park. For air quality purposes, you may choose to keep your windows closed on the day of the burn. Otherwise, there is no cause for concern.

How are Residents Being Notified?

All properties within a quarter-mile radius of the park have been mailed informational postcards. We will be updating this page with date and time as soon as they become available. We'll also be updating the City's FacebookInstagram, and website homepage; the Parks & Recreation Department's Facebook; and we will send alerts to all website news subscribers.

If you have additional questions, please contact the Department of Public Services by email or by phone at 248-246-3300.
